Travelling into the Deep
There is a great difference of experiencing something from the inside and the outside.
Our week with Ande gave us a peek into the a Sami perspective, - an interesting peek into his outlook on the world and his ideas of wearing many different 'hats'.

Past Alta Future

The rock carvings in Alta are the largest known collection of rock carvings in northern Europe made by hunter-gatherers- the first of the carvings uncovered in 1973
age: between 6200 and 2000 years old.
What makes the rock carvings in alta unique is that they are so varied and include so many different figures - the four uncovered fields hold more than 5000 figures.
The most common pictures are of animals, especially reindeer and moose.
The carvings were made in the bedrock with hammer and chisel.
A psychogeographic diagram of the economy of the region past?
where the economy= fishing and reindeer herding

Alta acts as a sort of regional hub
It houses:
university
large malls
5 fish farms
reindrift
agriculture
building industry
shale foundry
The industry is driven/drives the surroundings
AND Responsible for providing surrounding building infrastructure
eg.the Melkøya project in Hammerfest.

The shopping malls look like they could be in Oslo, anywhere.
Brand new church and swimming pool.
The city is developing at a rate and model of a suburb.
Does it lack character?
Is it modeled after its paleolithic history?
Or is it an assembly of capital: industries and marketplaces?
What does the future hold?

My expectations are very much formed by my previous experience.

Welcome
Dear students:
We are very happy that you have chosen this studio about the coming and vanishing arctic... and the prosperity and challenges in this - seemingly immense and dispersed region. Arguably the Arctic has the same significance for the future well being of the globe, as other more emphasized global regions such as the Amazon. The limelight is on in the high north, and we want architects and landscape architects to be aware and prepared for a future, expected exploitation that might transform the Arctic in a way that will challenge our existence beyond the limitations of the territory..
